What do I need to do to have a course taught at my fire station?

Answer:  Contact EST or your local technical college and/or complete and submit a course request.

How do I get a course request form?

Answer:  There are several ways to obtain a course request form:

  • Use this web site to download a current form (look under "EST Forms" in the top left menu bar)

  • Call EST at (208) 334-3216 or 1-888-242-0210 to request a form to be mailed or faxed to you

  • Stop by EST's office - which is located at 650 W. State St., Room 324, Boise, ID

  • Call your local technical college

What courses does EST offer?

Answer:  EST approved courses are listed in EST's Course Catalog or call EST at (208) 334-3216 or 1-888-242-0210 (toll free)  Click on "Training" on the top left menu bar and look under 'Training Resources' for a PDF version of the catalog.

What does it cost to have a class?

Answer:  The costs vary and depend on the type of class requested.  Costs charged to a department can range from $0 to full cost recovery.  Contact EST for specific cost arrangements.

Instructor

How do I become an EST instructor?

Answer:  Click on the link entitled "Instructor Information" in the top left menu bar.  Under this section you will find instructor qualification requirements and an application form.  If you need additional information/assistance or are unable to use the web site, call EST at (208) 334-3216 or 1-888-242-0210 (toll free).

How do I qualify to teach in more than one technical college service area?

Answer:  You will need to complete adjunct faculty applications and/or payroll forms for each technical college where you will be teaching.

How long does it take to get paid after instructing a class?

Answer:  You can normally expect to receive a wage check and/or reimbursement check two to fours weeks after the class paperwork, timesheets, and travel reimbursement requests are completed and returned to the sponsoring technical college.  Some of the technical colleges use direct deposit and do not issue payroll checks.

IFSAC Accredited Certification and AAS Degree

How do I get an IFSAC accredited Idaho Fire Fighter I or II certificate?

Answer:  There are two steps that you will need to follow before you can receive Idaho certification.  First, you will need to meet the required qualifications/prerequisites and second, you will need to successfully pass the certification examination process.  Visit our Fire Certifications web page to get additional information about the requirements for Idaho certification.

What is IFSAC?

Answer:  IFSAC is the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, a self governing system that accredits both fire service programs and higher education fire related degree programs.  Idaho has been an accredited member of IFSAC since 1998 in the areas of Fire Fighter I, II and Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator - Pumper certifications.

Will Idaho grant receiprocity for an IFSAC accredited certification from another state?

Answer:  Yes - provided that the certification is current and is one of the levels accredited by IFSAC in Idaho.

How do I get an AAS in Fire Science?

Answer:  First, you will need to complete a prescribed course of technical training and then, you will need to contact your local technical college about entering the AAS degree program. For specific information about technical courses or for contact information about your local technical college advisory, contact EST.

Do out-of-state college credits apply to the AAS degree?

Answer:  Yes/No.  Your local technical college can review you transcripts and make a determination as to which classes will be accepted.

Are EMS and EST the same thing?

Answer:  No.  EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is affiliated with Health and Welfare.  They are located at 590 W. Washington, Boise, ID - (208) 334-4000.  Or visit their website.

What are your office hours?

Answer:  Normal office hours are from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm - Mountain Time.

How do I find out what training resources are available?

Answer:  Click on "Training" on the top left menu bar and look under "Training Resources" for a PDF version of EST's course catalog..  If you need additional information/assistance or are unable to use the website, call EST at (208) 334-3216 or 1-888-242-0210 (toll free).

Can I get a list of all the classes that I have taken?

Answer:  Yes.  Submit a written request, including social security number, current address, and signature to EST.  A copy of your training record will be sent to you.  You can also come into our office to pick up a copy your training record.

I am a high school student and I want to become a fire fighter, what do I do?

Answer:  If you are a Junior or Senior, you need to contact your school counselor.  Ask you counselor if there is an IOT (Individual Occupational Training) program available, or if there is an Explorer Post established with a local fire department or whether there may be internships available.
