Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

GIS is a technology that is used to view and analyze data from a geographic perspective. This technology is part of a framework for organizing information. GIS takes data and organizes it on a map. For example, GIS data could identify your customer base or determine where fire hydrants might be located for emergency services. It allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in ways simply not possible in the rows and columns of a spreadsheet.  For a visual example of GIS applications visit this link for a short video clip, http://www.esri.com/flashmedia/whatisgis.swf

The worldwide market for geospatial technologies has enormous potential.  Estimated at $5 billion in 2001, the market is projected to have annual revenues of $30 billion by 2005. (Geospatial Workforce Development Center, University of Southern Mississippi)  Careers in geospatial technology disciplines are available in many segments of commercial, public, government, and academic communities.  The projected growth in geospatial related occupations is estimated to range from between 10 to 35%. (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2004 wages and 2002-2012 projection series)

GIS educational opportunities take place at both the secondary and postsecondary level.  Grades K - 3, for example can use GIS to study biodiversity and the environment.  Grades 4 - 6 might use GIS to study geography.  Grades 7 - 8 might use GIS to study history, and grades 9 - 12 can use GIS to begin developing occupational skills required to work in the GIS industry.  At the postsecondary level, both 2 year and 4 year degrees are offered.

In response to industry demand, the Idaho Division of Professional-Technical Education is pleased to announce an agreement with ESRI to provide GIS software to K-12 education statewide.  The agreement includes both the Arc 9.1 and Arc 3.3 versions of software, along with the associated Spatial Analyst and 3-D Analyst extensions.  This opportunity is available for all K-12 teachers in all instructional settings.  For more information about ESRI and GIS please visit the ESRI Website and explore the links below.

Obtaining GIS Software

GIS Software is available at no cost to school districts in the State of Idaho.  In order to obtain a copy of the GIS software, the school district must agree to the terms and conditions of the school licensure agreement.  This agreement must be signed by an individual at the district level who has the authority to obligate the district to the terms and conditions in the agreement.  On the agreement, the contact person who will be responsible for making additional copies of the software and distributing to the schools will need to be identified.

Download the agreement below, fill in the appropriate contact information and select the version(s) of software needed for your district, please view the system requirements for more information.  Mail the original copy to the State Division of Professional-Technical Education.  For quicker service a fax may be sent to the Division office, however the original document must follow in the mail.
