Best Practices: Collision Repair Committee

Collision Repair Committee

The SkillsUSA Idaho Collision Repair Contest Committee has been selected as an "exemplary" contest committee for three reasons:

painting1. The Collision Repair Contest has a large and very active committee membership. Industry representatives vie for the opportunity to join this elite group. Though competitors in their daily jobs, they work side-by-side to prepare and carry-out a first class contest. Members meet early and often in the contest year as they prepare the contest. Individual contest "stations" are assigned to teams of committee members. Many members shut down their business on the day of the contest so that they can act as judges at the contest, an action that personally costs their businesses thousands of dollars.

body repair2. The Collision Repair Contest is an exceptional contest that exceeds the standards set by the SkillsUSA Idaho Board of Directors: "a transparently fair contest that rigorously tests industry standards and prepares the contestant for the national competition". It costs many thousands of dollars to carry out the collision repair contest. Every contestant has their own fender (or similar auto-body part) to repair dents in and to paint. Every contestant paints under industry conditions to an industry standard. Same with welding, estimating, etc. Fenders and paint and sprayers cost a lot of money, yet the collision repair industry cheerfully donates this material to the contest committee for two reasons: (1) the contest committee members are active and well-respected members of the collision repair industry, and (2) industry recognizes that it must foster an attitude of support for the student competitors if they want these competitors to stay in Idaho and work in the industry.

prizes3. The Collision Repair Contest provides prizes to the competitors that "wow" any who have seen them. First through third place finishers often take home tools and tool boxes worth thousands of dollars. The advisors of these students also get prizes. All competitors, no matter what their place in the contest, get something. The contest committee also sponsors contest winners so the student does not have to bear the full cost of attending the national contest. The Collision Repair Contest committee maintains its own bank account and strict accounting procedures so that all members of the industry who donate feel assured that their donations to the contest go toward the contest, the student, or the advisor.
