Want to get a Walking Rally organized?
Here’s what you need to do as the organizer:
- Choose a date and reserve a central meeting room/area.
- Two weeks prior to the event, walk an area close to your office; stay within a 15-20 minute distance of the office. Make a list of 10-12 specific items that can be seen in that area while you are walking.
- Next: create and post a promotional poster for the rally. Put a sign-up sheet in a central area within your office/agency and invite employees via email to participate in the rally and sign up for a team. Consider inviting employees from nearby agencies; the more the merrier! Each team is responsible to bring one digital camera with them to the rally.
- Next: consider whether you will give a prize to the winning team – a fruit or veggie basket is always a good idea – it’s healthy, affordable, and can be easily shared. Or, forget the prize and just enjoy the fun!
- The day of the event, the organizer meets for 5 minutes with all the teams at the central meeting room. Answer questions and read the rally rules. Next: give each team a copy of the list of specific items they need to photograph…and send them off!
- The organizer remains in place and waits for teams to come back. The organizer clocks arrival times and checks pictures. Most teams complete the rally within 25-30 minutes. The organizer can usually announce the winner before the end of the hour.
Have extra Participants Agreements available on the date of the Rally so each team member can read and sign one.
Hints:
- Enjoy the chaos and fun. Remember, it’s all about walking and moving around, it’s not about rules, timelines, and prizes.
- Download pictures from the cameras used during the Rally. They can be very useful for future promotions and rallies.
- Be sensible about the weather – it’s Idaho! Don’t let a little rain, snow, or wind stop the fun. However, be sensible – if the ice is thick and the snow is blowing, hold off.
Note: send your rally dates to Health Matters and we’ll post your event to the Classes/Clinics/Events page.
